General information for postgraduate admissions

Funding

MSc in Resource and Environmental Management

MSc in Environmental Informatics

MSc in Environmental Performance Management

MRes in Environment and Development (Overseas Placement)


We now have the following funding in place for these Masters schemes for 2008 -09. 

1) Two bursaries funded by the Department of Geography for the MRes in Environment and Development (Overseas Placement), each worth half the fees (£2300 each).  All applicants for this scheme will be considered.  Funding decisions are usually made in late March.

2) Two bursaries funded by the Department of Geography for the MSc degree schemes in Resource and Environmental Management and Environmental Performance Management, each worth half the fees (£1680 each).  All applicants for this scheme will be considered.  Funding decisions are usually made in late March.

3) Six bursaries funded by NERC for the MSc in Environmental Informatics, each bursary worth £5800 (comprising £1660 for half the fees and £4140 as a maintenance grant).  All applicants for this scheme will be considered.  Funding decisions are usually made in late March.

4) Each overseas student on any Geography Masters scheme will receive back £1000 on successful completion of the taught modules.

Environment and Development

(Overseas Placement) MRes and PG Diploma

How do you protect the environment and implement sustainable policies in developing countries whose first aim is economic growth and the elimination of poverty? That is the central issue in this unique MRes degree scheme. The three core modules will give you a solid grounding in the fundamentals of development and the environment, and in research methods for less developed countries. The optional module lets you personalise the degree to your career interests.

This will prepare you for your overseas placement in Africa, Asia or the Caribbean where, working with a host institution, you will research a problem in development and the environment.

Careers based on this degree can be found with NGOs, companies with a good sense of corporate responsibility and government agencies.

Environmental lnformatics

MSc and PG Diploma

This innovative MSc meets a new need – the science and art of turning environmental data into information and understanding on how to solve environmental problems. You will be taught about the creation, collection, storage, processing, modelling, interpretation, display and dissemination of data and information. You will use state-of-the-art facilities and software. Then you will complete a research placement or a dissertation, applying your skills to a realworld problem.

This interdisciplinary degree in EI will appeal to information scientists, environmental scientists and social scientists.

There are four core modules on EI and research methods, and two optional modules to match your career interests.

EI graduate are in increasing demand by planning consultancies, local authorities, utilities and conservation bodies in the UK and overseas.

Resource and Environmental Management

M Sc and PG Diploma

Managing the world’s resources has never been more important, nor more complex a challenge. This MSc degree scheme gives you the tools to achieve this – research skills, practical knowledge of real issues of management and policy, evaluation tools, ideas on environmental justice, and data-handling techniques. This MSc takes a broad approach to the environment, reconciling scientific and social-science insights to the management of resources and people.

This interdisciplinary degree will appeal to social scientists needing to understand the environment better and scientists needing to better appreciate management systems.

Five core modules give you the basics and an optional module fits the degree to your career interests. A research placement or dissertation complete the degree.

Careers will be found in local government, national environmental agencies and private consultancies in the UK and overseas.

Environmental Performance Management

MSc and PG Diploma

How can we measure our impact on the environment or the success of environmental policies? The answer to that question is vital for achieving really sustainable development. Environmental performance managers need technical and people skills to be effective in the real world. This degree scheme gives you these skills. The environmental auditing module also gives you a professional qualification in this field in addition to the MSc.

There are five core modules and an optional one to help you tailor your degree to your career interests. You also complete a research placement or dissertation. Career opportunities for the graduates of this MSc are likely to be found in private consultancies and public agencies in the UK and overseas.
